It’s easy to make, customizable, and great for meal prep. Let’s get started!
Ingredients:
For the BBQ Tempeh:
1 block (8 oz) tempeh, cut into cubes or strips
1/2 cup BBQ sauce (store-bought or homemade)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon soy sauce or tamari
1 teaspoon maple syrup (optional, for extra sweetness)
For the Bowl:
1 cup cooked brown rice or quinoa
1/2 cup black beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 cup corn (fresh, frozen, or canned)
1/2 avocado, sliced
1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup shredded cabbage (red or green)
1/4 cup sliced red onion
1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro (for garnish)
Lime wedges (for serving)
For the Dressing (Optional):
2 tablespoons tahini
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2–3 tablespoons water (to thin)
Salt and pepper to taste

Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Prepare the Tempeh
Start by steaming the tempeh to remove any bitterness. Place it in a steaming basket over boiling water for about 10 minutes, then let it cool slightly.
2. Marinate the Tempeh
In a bowl, mix the BBQ sauce, olive oil, smoked paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, soy sauce, and maple syrup. Add the steamed tempeh and toss to coat. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes (or longer for deeper flavor).
3. Cook the Tempeh
Heat a pan over medium heat and add a little oil. Cook the tempeh for about 3–4 minutes per side until caramelized and slightly crispy. Alternatively, bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through, or air-fry at 375°F for 12–15 minutes.
4. Prepare the Dressing
Whisk together the tahini, lemon juice, maple syrup, garlic powder, and water in a small bowl. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if needed. Season with salt and pepper.
5. Assemble the Bowl
Divide the cooked brown rice or quinoa into bowls. Arrange the black beans, corn, avocado, cherry tomatoes, cabbage, and red onion around the bowl. Place the cooked BBQ tempeh on top.
6. Garnish and Serve
Drizzle the tahini dressing over the bowl, sprinkle with fresh cilantro, and serve with lime wedges on the side. Enjoy your smoky, tangy BBQ tempeh bowl!
Tips for the Best BBQ Tempeh Bowl:
Steam the tempeh first to remove bitterness and improve texture.
Let the tempeh marinate for extra flavor—overnight if possible!
Switch up the grains with farro, couscous, or cauliflower rice.
Add crunch with toasted pumpkin seeds or crushed tortilla chips.
Make it meal-prep-friendly by storing the ingredients separately and assembling them before eating.
This BBQ tempeh bowl is smoky, hearty, and packed with nutrients. Give it a try and make it your own!💖👇🍽🍒
